About

“The task of the artist is to sense more keenly than others the harmony of the world, the beauty and the outrage of what man has done to it, and poignantly, to let people know. Art warms even an icy and depressed heart, opening it to lofty, personal experience. By means of art we are sometimes sent dimly, briefly, revelations unattainable by reason, like that little mirror in the fairy tales. Look into it and you will see not yourself but for a moment, that which passes understanding, a realm to which no man can ride or fly and for which the soul begins to ache.”  – Alexander Solzhenitsyn, quoted by Malcolm Muggeridge in The End of Christendom

This quote is kind of a credo for Alternate Arts.

I’m Jim Wall, chief instigator at Alternate Arts. Welcome!

Got something to share as an artist, a ministry leader, or as an observer, and you want me to blog about it? Happy to! Reach out through the contact menu. You could even wind up with a free t-shirt. See “free merch!” for more info.

The call to Christians has always been to bring salt and light to their culture. One of the best ways of doing this is through the arts. Christian artists are the true counterculture – the alternate artists.

  1. I just wanted to say I just found your blog, and already I’ve torn through five of your posts. The encouragement and ideas are refreshing!

I’m a missionary with SIM, and I use my creative skills in video production for the organization. But my interest and artistic gifts are far beyond just video work. I paint, dance, write, make music, and otherwise create. The intersection of life, art and faith is a passion of mine. Since 2009, I have blogged about these subjects, and about the opportunity for the Church to rise up and to declare the glory of God through the arts. For the longest time, it felt like I was the only voice. 🙂 I’ve since found out that no, I was not the only one! Moreover, I was one of many who are embracing the call to create for the glory of the Creator.

IAM linked to your website on Twitter the other day. I’m so glad I followed the link. It’s good to find others writing about being the salt of the earth through the arts!
